Herold's "La fille mal gardee" - June 22nd - 1:30 PM

Frederick Ashton’s final full-length ballet La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) is one of his most joyous creations, inspired by his love for the Suffolk countryside. It is based on a 1789 French ballet originally created by Jean Dauberval; John Lanchbery created the music for Ashton’s ballet from Ferdinand Hérold’s 1828 score. La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. The ballet displays some of Ashton’s most virtuoso choreography, most strikingly in the series of energetic pas de deux that express the youthful passion of Lise and Colas. The ballet is also laced with exuberant good humour, in a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and one very unwilling suitor. Ashton affectionately incorporated elements of national folk dance into his choreography, from a Lancashire clog dance to a maypole dance, making La Fille mal gardée – despite its title – emphatically English. Osbert Lancaster’s colourful designs heighten the production’s delightful pastoral wit.

Principals of The Royal Ballet Natalia Osipova (Lise) and Steven McRae (Colas) perform the Adagio pas de deux for Lise and Colas in Act I scene 2.   Run Time: 2 hours 15 minutes    Purchase Tickets

She is joined by Liparit Avetisyan*, *Boris Pinkhasovich and the incomparable Bryn Terfel as the genial wheeler-dealer Doctor Dulcamara.

Prokofiev's "Cinderella" - July 27th - 1:30 PM

The theme of a comedy character can be found across ballets choreographed by Frederick Ashton, and in Cinderella, he brought two of the worlds most famous step-sisters to life with his signature blend of tongue-in-cheek comedy and classic choreography. Vain, vapid and obsessed with status, the step-sisters couldn’t be more different to Cinderella. In this introduction to the delightfully mean-spirited duo, Senior Répétiteur and Principal Character Artist Gary Avis discusses what the role means to him. First Soloist James Hay and Principal Character Artist Bennet Gartside explain how they follow in the footsteps of our founding choreographer Frederick Ashton, who originated the role alongside Robert Helpmann, while taking a modern approach to the characters.   Run Time:  1 hour 45 minutes Purchase tickets

Handel's "Theodora" - August 10th - 1:30 PM

Julia Bullock, Joyce DiDonato and Jakub Józef Orliński star in Katie Mitchell’s thrilling new production of Handel’s Theodora in an alternative modern-day reality, Theodora, a religious fundamentalist, plots for the resistance against the Roman occupation. But when her secret plan to destroy the Roman embassy is discovered, she learns the true brutality of her oppressors. Not heard in Covent Garden since its 1750 premiere and sung in the original English libretto by Thomas Morell, Theodora is a tour de force for soloists and chorus alike, with ensembles, duets and arias of profound depth and beauty. This new interpretation, conducted by Baroque specialist Harry Bicket, shines a new, feminist light on the story. This production depicts explicit violence and sexual harassment, scenes of sexual violence and sexual exploitation, and contains themes of terrorism.

"Starstruck" - Gene Kelly's Love Letter to Ballet - August 31st - 1:30 PM

Inspired by Gene Kelly’s iconic work in Hollywood, Starstruck, winner of the 2022 Best Dance Film Award at the National Dance Awards, brings an immersive, theatrical experience, in which audiences around the world can escape with us to the glamour and grace of Paris, 1960. One of the first choreographers to bring the ‘American style’ to Europe, the legendary Gene Kelly was invited to create an original work for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1960. His jazzy, joyful Pas de Dieux was highly acclaimed at the time as ‘a breath of fresh air’ but has been rarely performed since. It has now been given a new set of wings for its life on stage and screen. In collaboration with Kelly’s widow, Patricia Ward Kelly, Scottish Ballet’s CEO/Artistic Director Christopher Hampson and designer Lez Brotherston (The Snow Queen, The Secret Theatre) have lovingly revived the original ballet and added a delightful new twist. You’ll be transported into the world where jazz meets ballet, and the stars align.

Verdi's "Otello" - September 28th - 1:30 PM

Otello is Verdi’s final tragedy. After astonishing productivity in his early career, the composer slowed in later life; more than fifteen years separate Otello and its predecessor, Aida, although Verdi revised his earlier works Simon Boccanegra and Don Carlo in the interim. He was lured out of retirement by the composer and librettist Arrigo Boito, who tempted him with a proposal that was very close to Verdi’s heart: Shakespeare’s Othello. Boito adapted the libretto from Shakespeare’s play, with much intervention from Verdi. As the latest utterance from the master of Italian opera, the 1887 premiere was an instant success – but, more than that, Otello has been an important part of the international opera repertory ever since.

Jonas Kaufmann and Marco Vratogna sing 'Si, pel ciel marmoreo giuro' from Verdi's Otello in Keith Warner's production.   Run Time:  3 hours 10 minutes   Purchase Tickets
